Augustus Reichman was the patriarch of the Reichman family and survivor of the global superflu pandemic of the early 2050s. His father ran a very successful security and surveillance company that made the family very wealthy. Augustus was learning the ropes of the trade during the period of unrest that preceded the apocalypse, when their already substantial business tripled. The Reichmans became extremely close to the police department in those years and Augustus made several important contacts that would serve him well in the coming years.
As civil society collapsed, young Augustus (barely out of his teens) organized what he called the Public Defense Squad (PDS), a band of vigilantes who were not afraid to kill or be killed in order to protect their material possessions. The group was poorly organized and ill-disciplined, and as sickness claimed many of the founding members Augustus worked with former police officers to instill order to the ranks. Reichman himself instituted the death penalty for insubordination. Despite the mounting death toll due to the superflu, the new-look squad took up residence in the Allen Bradley complex. Augustus struck a power sharing deal with wealthy arms broker Marshall Johnson, who would become the patriarch of the Johnson family. Together they rebranded the military force as the MPD.
Though Augustus was not a particularly intelligent man, he read people extremely well and helped them believe they had common interests. He quickly discarded anyone whose purposefulness had ended and always worked to consolidate his power. Though his union with the Johnson family allowed for his clan's meteoric rise in the post-apocalypse, he always bitterly regretted failing to diminish their influence in the MPD.
Augustus died in his sleep at the ripe age of 86, leaving control of the family to his wife Frederika.
